Açaí Bowl Soap - A Great Cakes Soapy Challenge!

Açaí Bowl Soap

The Great Cakes Soap Challenge for June 2019

Challenge | Food and Drink

The soap Great Cakes Soap Challenge for June 2019 is to make a soap with food and drink. I entered the Regular Category where you must use at least one edible (food) ingredient, with a usage rate of up to 1 part per 8 parts of oils, and at least one drink ingredient, usage rate of 50-100% of the liquid portion of the soap. My Açaí Bowl soap is made with Açaí berry for the food, and coconut water as the drink. I chose to enter this specific challenge because I LOVE Açaí bowls for breakfast! The way I make mine is by combining coconut water with frozen Açaí puree - as seen in the soap recipe. I previously made an “Açaí Bowl” soap and thought it was a cute idea for the challenge. I was going to make that same recipe again and instead of melt and pour “fruit” on top, I would use the real thing, but dried. Seemed like it would work so I went ahead and bought several varieties of freeze-dried fruits. I then made my standard batch of soap with coconut water as the liquid and added the Açaí at light trace as I did before.

Everything looked fine. That is, until I added the fragrance oil. I'm actually not sure what caused the problem, but my soap completely separated! All 3 lbs of it turned into a gloppy messy disaster. I tried again and did a larger water discount thinking maybe I had too much liquid. Same issue! So I reached out to a soap group and thankfully, saved my batch by hot processing it. Lesson learned, DO NOT throw away soap if it fails you. Unless its lye heavy, you can most likely save it. Try putting it in a crock pot, turning it on med-high and stir it until it is liquid. It really was that easy. See the images below of the before and after - such a difference!
